It is the sacred duty of the funeral professional to ensure that the contractual wishes of the family of the deceased are met, if not exceeded. A critical part of this responsibility is maintaining a secure funeral home chain of custody to ensure the deceased is always treated with dignity and respect. This includes the iron-clad guarantee of their identity throughout the process and a consistent, complete record of the chain of custody at every step. This includes funeral homes with or without a crematory, cemeteries, combos, and stand-alone crematoria.
Cremation poses an even greater risk. Cremation is final. You cannot un-cremate someone. Because of that and the fact that no DNA remains after the process is complete, cremation holds the highest amount of risk and liability for a funeral professional.
